ABOUT CHARLI
I am a makeup artist and lecturer specialising in the history of makeup and creative makeup practice and most importantly, an enthusiastic champion of self-expression.
My debut book - Made Up: A History of Identity and Gender Expression Through Makeup and Style - published by Routledge in December 2024, is available globally.
The book is the result of over a decade of research, teaching and an unyielding passion for the history of makeup, style and identity.
Academically, makeup hasn’t received quite the same coverage as other forms of expression until more recently. As a lecturer on the topic, I found myself compiling sources for my students from multiple disciplines, making connections between gender, intersectionality, psychology, marketing and more. When I was approached to write this book, I knew that I wanted to create something that would be useful for students and educators on the topic, but also for those outside of the academic sphere who might be interested in reading about this, without the barriers of traditional academia.
